You never know who’ll walk into our studios – welcome to The Back Forty. This is where we highlight artists who walk the line outside of today’s country chart with their music, as well as the folks who have made an impact on country music – yesterday and today.
With classic songs like “Black Water,” “China Grove,” and “Listen to the Music,” The Doobie Brothers are a solid part of the American music landscape. From their beginnings in 1969, through the years, the group has tapped into multiple styles from R&B and rock to blues and country. And, while selling over 22 million albums and winning multiple Grammy Awards is an impressive feat, it’s how many artists – from all genres – that the group has influenced that is the most impressive accomplishment of all.
In 2014, the group teamed up with some of country’s brightest stars and newcomers for Southbound. The project honors their unique place in American music as artists like Blake Shelton and Brad Paisley teamed up with the band on some of the Doobies biggest hits.
In this edition of The Back Forty, we take a look back at Kix’s 2014 visit with original members Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee of The Doobie Brothers as they discuss recording Southbound and about their musical influences.
