This story reminds me of that TV show MacGyver… That guy can do anything on the fly!

Recently, a 21-year-old engineering student by the name of Karttikey Mangalam was on a flight home to New Dehli from Geneva where he finished an exchange program.

While on the plane, a man, who suffered from type 1 diabetes, realized he had forgotten his insulin pump at airport security. His blood sugar was rising. So, the crew found a passenger who also had diabetes and had short-term insulin cartridges. Unfortunately, they needed to pump the insulin and these were injection cartridges.

So, the engineering student logged on to his computer and quickly researched how he could turn the cartridge into a pump. Passengers helped to gather as many ball point pens as they could, and he found a spring from one of the pens that would possibly work.  He reassembled the cartridge device with the spring and pumped the insulin.

Well, the man’s blood sugar levels returned to normal. And, this 21-year-old New Dehli engineering student said that he had no idea that his engineering class would help save a life, but that’s exactly what happened.

So, Mr. Mangalam, you are this week’s Kidde Hero!

Kix’s Response:

I am not sure how many people would remain calm and keep their composure to go get a bunch of ballpoint pens, research, and execute a job like that… Pretty great stuff!
