The Song Remembers When: Brad Paisley – “He Didn’t Have To Be”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Since it’s Father’s Day weekend, we thought we’d highlight one of the most requested songs for dads:  Brad Paisley’s second single – “He Didn’t Have To Be.”

According to Brad, he told his best friend and frequent collaborator Kelley Lovelace that they should write something that would make Kelly’s wife cry. You see, Kelly became a stepdad to his son McCain when he married his wife Karen.  So, the song they wrote was about their own personal story.

Brad said that the three minute song was life-changing for him. And, he said that he didn’t think he’d have a record deal today if he hadn’t had that song. It went on to become Brad’s first number one song.

Here’s Brad Paisley and “He Didn’t Have To Be,” – this week’s The Song Remembers When.
