This week, we’d like to recognize an English teacher from Spruce Creek High School in Florida – Mr. Gary Nelson. Mr. Nelson lost his battle with cancer earlier this month, and the stories of his ability to reach and inspire students have been pouring in.

For the last 20 years, Mr. Nelson taught English. His method of teaching was considered a little old school. One student remarked that he would use the chalk board a lot instead of PowerPoint like other teachers and that he would bring his lectures to life and even get into character when talking about novels that students were reading. He encouraged his students to speak up, and he had a desire for all of them to go on to college and become critical thinkers.

His grandson remembered that he would always say that the world needs be more compassionate. So many people felt that through his example the kids he taught would go on to be better people.

Suzanne’s Response:

What a great story. Truly, a teacher can make all the difference in child or young adult’s life. And, I really don’t think that they get enough credit, so we are happy to recognize him as our Kidde Hero of the Week.
