In 2012, Dierks Bentley was on top of the chart with his song “5-1-5-0.” He co-wrote the tune with his longtime producer and songwriting buddy Brett Beavers along with Brett’s brother Jim.
The guys said that they got the idea from Van Halen’s album 5150. But, Brett changed the pronunciation to 5-1-5-0 and rhymed it with “somebody call the po-po.” When he told Dierks about the rhyme, Dierks thought it was the stupidest thing he’d ever heard, but Brett kept after him.
After struggling with some other ideas during a writing session, Dierks finally said what the heck, let’s write 5-1-5-0. They played off the fact that 5-1-5-0 is the police code for someone out there acting crazy.
The song made it on to Dierks’ album Home, and it was the follow-up single to the album’s title cut.
