The Song Remembers When: Florida Georgia Line – “Cruise”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

We’re gonna take you back to where it all began for Florida Georgia Line in this week’s The Song Remembers When. It was December 2012 when their debut song reached number one and stayed there for three weeks. Then, the song went on to become the biggest-selling digital single in country music history.

“Cruise” was co-written by Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard of FGL, along with brothers Chase and Jesse Rice and producer Joey Moi.

Chase said that they were writing a different song when Tyler started to hum the melody to “Cruise.” So, they dropped what they were doing and went along with Tyler’s idea. They finished the song in 45 minutes. Once they got into the studio, “Cruise” went through several edits before it ended up how you hear it today.

Tyler remembers Brian predicting that the song would go on to sell a million copies. Tyler was skeptical and didn’t feel their first single would be that big. But, lucky for both of them, Brian was right… But, he undersold it – “Cruise” has gone on to sell a lot more than a million! How about 11 million copies?!?! And, back in 2013, it was named Single of the Year at the CMA Awards.

Here is this week’s The Song Remembers When – Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.”
