Dear Kix,

I was wondering how YOU got started in country music and what advice you have for singers wanting to move to Nashville and make it today.

Thanks so much,
Kayla

Kix's Response:

Thanks for your question, Kayla!

Well, to answer your first question about how I got started in country music, it really got going when I was in college.  I had been playing and singing most of my life, but there was this movement going on back then with Waylon and Willie and the Eagles and I just loved it.

So, I started playing those songs with some friends, and we got together and played all the time – not because we were trying to make money or be famous, we just loved to play and sing!  And, you have to love it that much!  You have to realize you’d be doing it for free, regardless… You just do it because it’s so much fun!

And then, you begin to get better because you’re playing all the time…and if you have the talent, you get good and people offer you money to do it… And when you’re finally making enough money to make a living, you realize maybe it’s time to see if I can swim in the big pond, and you head for Nashville to see how you measure up!

But, get ready, because this town is full of the most talented people in the world. It blows my mind how many folks here can play and sing and write great songs!

So, my advice would be: Practice like crazy, play all you can, be prepared for the level of competition, and know it’s not going to happen fast.  If you’re good enough, you can do it, but you’re still gonna have to get in line.

But, heck, if I can make it how hard can it be?

Good luck, Kayla!
