The Song Remembers When: “Nobody To Blame” – Chris Stapleton

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In honor of the ACM Awards this weekend, we chose the 2016 ACM Song of the Year “Nobody To Blame” by Chris Stapleton for The Song Remembers When.

Chris co-wrote this song with Ronnie Bowman and Barry Bales. Ronnie came into the songwriting session a little bummed out because he had just had an argument with his wife. As he was telling the guys what had happened, he wrapped up his story with the line: “But I’ve got nobody to blame to but me.” It was at that point they all looked at each other and knew that was the song they were writing that day.

At the time, Chris had yet to nail down his record deal, so they were hoping the song might find its way to a big star.  And, as it turned out, Chris would record it for his album Traveller and the song would not only become his first Top 10 hit, it would go on to win the ACM Song of the Year…
