The Song Remembers When: “Day Drinking” – Little Big Town

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In November of 2014, Little Big Town reached number one with their song “Day Drinking.”  It was the first song released from their Pain Killer album, and Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet of the group co-wrote the song with Barry Dean and Troy Verges.

Now, Karen said that the day they wrote the song, they were drinking and writing.  And, after the session, they kind of forgot about the song until a few weeks later when Barry and Troy sent them this souped up work tape of what they had done.  And, they loved it!  Jimi said that they just knew this thing was gonna be a single!

As for the whistling in the beginning of the song, Karen said that happened out of necessity. They had just gotten off the road, and Karen said her voice was trashed, so she was just whistling what Troy had played on mandolin.  And, it sounded so good that they kept it!

This week’s The Song Remembers When is Little Big Town and “Day Drinking:”
