The Song Remembers When: “Don’t It” – Billy Currington

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2014, Billy Currington released the first song off his album Summer Forever. The song would peak at number one in June of 2015, just about the time the album was released. It was written by Jaren Johnston, Ashley Gorley, and Ross Copperman – some of Nashville’s best.

Now, Jaren and Ross had a little bit of the track going when the writing session started. And, Jaren picked up his guitar started playing, as he describes it, a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “breakdown” riff. And, the lyrics than came about as the guys started to just freestyle over the music.

Jaren said that the only line they disagreed on was “come on, baby, bring on it” instead of “bring it on.” Well, they kept it and said that was the line everyone talks about it. Jaren said that he felt like it’s the coolest line in the song.

Initially, the guys thought of Dierks Bentley, but he wasn’t cutting, and the song found its way to Billy Currington. And, Billy said that he knew it was a hit as soon as he heard it, and he credits producer Dann Huff for working his magic and getting that “groove set back in the pocket like it is.”

It became Billy’s ninth number one, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – “Don’t It:”
