The Song Remembers When: Kenny Chesney’s “You and Tequila,” featuring Grace Potter

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2011, Kenny Chesney reached the Top 5 with the fourth single from his album Hemingway’s Whiskey. The song “You and Tequila” was co-written by Deana Carter and Matraca Berg.

Deana said that the song is a bit of a mix of topics that they wound up talking about during the writing session, from drinking to recovery to relationships. She said that the idea was to compare how alcohol can affect the body like a bad relationship.

Kenny heard the song while on tour with Deana. She had actually already recorded it. But, years later, after having gone through a break-up himself, Kenny remembered that song and knew it was one he wanted to record.

Not knowing the artist Grace Potter but loving her music, he took a shot at seeing if she would join him on it.  She did and the result was magic.

So, this week’s The Song Remembers When is Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter with “You and Tequila.”
