The Song Remembers When: Kenny Chesney’s “Somewhere with You”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2011, Kenny Chesney would spend three weeks at number one with the song “Somewhere with You.”

It was co-written by J.T. Harding and Shane McAnally, and it was the first time that the two had ever written together.

At the time, Shane was returning to Nashville from L.A. after a failed record deal 10 years earlier. And, he wanted to give Music City another chance. Meanwhile, J.T. was dealing with heartache from a failed relationship and the loss of his father.

J.T. was known as a pop writer. He said that he had this rap-sounding part for the song that he had tried with other songwriters, but they all felt it wasn’t country enough. But, when Shane came along, he loved it!

After they wrote the song, Shane sent it to Kenny Chesney, who he had toured with during the time he had his record deal. It turned out that Kenny loved it and ended up recording it for his Hemingway’s Whiskey album and the rest is history…

So, here it is, this week’s The Song Remembers When – Kenny Chesney and “Somewhere with You.”
