The Song Remembers When: Brett Young – “Mercy”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Last August, Brett Young scored his third straight number one with “Mercy,” from his self-titled debut album. He co-wrote the song with Sean McConnell.  Brett told Sean that his record label wanted more up-tempo songs, and Sean encouraged him to forget that and just write the best song possible.

Well, they started to talk about past relationships and that’s when “Mercy” started to come together. Brett said that he loved the way that the song was a little vague and not so specific to his life. They did that on purpose so that it would be relatable to everybody hearing it.

Brett felt it was a significant song – so significant that he selected it to close out his album.

Here’s this week’s The Song Remembers When, Brett Young’s two-week number one “Mercy.”
