The Song Remembers When: Old Dominion – “Break Up With Him”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Reigning ACM and CMA Group of the Year Old Dominion scored their first number one “Break Up With Him“ back in 2015. All five members of the group had a hand in writing it.

The groups lead vocalist Matthew Ramsey said that the song actually came about while the band was on stage doing a sound check. They had been playing some random jam and it sounded so good that they recorded it on a phone.

The lyrics came about later while they were traveling in a van late at night. Matt had an idea about a one-sided conversation of a guy talking to a girl he liked. He shared the idea with bandmate Trevor Rosen. Matt said he was whispering the lyrics because he didn’t want to wake the rest of the guys who were sleeping. That “whispering,” he felt, helped set the tone for the song.

A few months later, while rehearsing in Texas, the band put the finishing touches on the song. It sounds like it was a three stage writing process for this one… And, it definitely paid off as their debut hit stayed at the top of the chart for two weeks!

This week’s The Song Remembers When is Old Dominion with “Break Up With Him.”
