Heroes of the Week: Eoghan Butler, Alex Thomson, Walter Butler, and Declan Butler

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week’s story comes all the way from Ireland.

Four brothers were on a trip celebrating the life of their grandfather who had recently passed. They went to spend the day at a beach near Dublin.

As they were unpacking their towels and blankets, they heard a man screaming for a lifeguard to help his little girl. The six-year-old girl was playing on a pink flamingo float when she started to get pulled out to sea by the current. With no lifeguard in sight, the brothers all jumped into the water, swimming as fast as they could to rescue the little girl. The boys were all athletes, and three of them had swam competitively.

It was their strength and the adrenaline that pushed them to keep swimming for 25 minutes until they were within an ear shot of that little girl, who seemed to be struggling to hold on to her float. Once they reached her, they each took turns swimming on their backs with the little girl on their chests as they swam back to shore.

To complicate things, while the boys were swimming out to the little girl, the father had put on a life vest. He was swimming out to help even though he wasn’t strong enough to fight the current. After nearly an hour of swimming to rescue the young girl, the boys had to return back to the water to bring the father back to shore.

When they all arrived safe on the beach, the paramedics were waiting and took the father and his little girl to the hospital where they were treated and released.

The brothers and the girl’s family reunited at the hospital for a, well deserved, thank you.

Ironically, the brothers had gone to that particular beach to celebrate the life of their grandfather whose own brother had drowned that same day 64 years earlier. They felt they had a guardian angel helping them with that rescue.

Kix’s Response:

I’ve gotta agree.
