The Song Remembers When: Rascal Flatts – “Yours If You Want It”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2017, Rascal Flatts took “Yours If You Want It” all the way to number one. This song was co-written by Jonathan Singleton and the late Andrew Dorff. Unfortunately, the song was released just weeks after Andrew’s sudden passing. He was only 40 years old.

Jonathan gave the credit to Andrew for his ability to turn a phrase. Man, he really could! He said that it was Andrew who had the idea of this “beat up, banged up heart that was ‘yours if you want it.’” He added that the late songwriter was great at unrequited love songs.

Now, the writing session took place in the same building as Rascal Flatts’ record label.  And, it was the label’s Allison Jones who heard the song and wanted it for the band. With Jay DeMarcus producing and lead vocalist Gary LeVox working some great melodies, the song took on that signature Rascal Flatts sound.

This one was really special for everyone involved. It would be just one of many songs that showed just how talented Andrew Dorff really was as a songwriter.

It’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – Rascal Flatts’ “Yours If You Want It.”
