The Song Remembers When: Keith Urban – “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In September of 2015, Keith Urban landed in the Top 3, peaking at number two, with “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16.” Even though he didn’t write it, he felt it suited him. And, it was the title that first drew him to the song.

It was written by Shane McAnally, Ross Copperman, and Josh Osborne – three of Nashville’s hottest songwriters. Shane said that the song was about that teenage angst: growing up in the country, watching your dad on a John Deere tractor, and listening to John Cougar [Mellencamp]. But, it was also about that push and pull we felt as kids: Sunday morning, confession, and John 3:16.  And, the song was about nostalgia and heroes, like John Wayne, Kris Kristofferson, Hemingway, and Mark Twain.

So, this week’s The Song Remembers When is Keith Urban’s “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16.”
