The Song Remembers When: Keith Urban – “You Gonna Fly”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2012, Keith Urban’s “You Gonna Fly” hit number one on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart. It was from Keith’s album Get Closer. Chris Lucas and Preston Brust of LOCASH, along with the Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston, wrote this song.

At the time, Chris and Preston were struggling to find success. They both were frustrated, thinking that maybe a career in music wasn’t going to pan out.  Then, they heard that Keith Urban had picked their song for his next album.

But, the excitement had to wait because it took three years before they finally got word that he was going to record it. And, on the day Keith was supposed to record the song, the session was cancelled because of the devastating Nashville flood in 2010. Talk about bad luck! Eventually, Keith recorded the song though.

Chris remembers sitting in his apartment with his little boy and his wife by his side, having a bit of a break down, not knowing how he would pay his rent, when his phone rang. It was Keith telling him the song was headed to radio!

It would go on to become a two-week number one for Keith, and it was career-changer for Chris and Preston of LOCASH! Plus, it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – Keith Urban’s “You Gonna Fly.”
