Hero of the Week: Captain Tom Moore

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, Jennie Hall, from the U.K., wrote in to nominate World War II veteran Captain Tom Moore. Now, this story has been all over the news so you may have caught it…

Captain Tom wanted to walk one hundred laps around his garden before his one hundredth birthday on April 30th. While achieving that goal, he hoped to raise funds for the National Health Service in the United Kingdom for all that they’ve been doing during this pandemic. Tom’s fundraising goal was one thousand pounds – that’s a little over 12 hundred dollars here in the States.

As word spread about what Captain Tom was doing, the donations poured in. He has now raised 26 million pounds, which is about 32 million dollars! He finished his one hundred laps prior to his April 30th birthday. And, upon reaching his goal, Captain Tom said to BBC Breakfast: “At the end of the day we shall all be okay. The sun will shine on you again and the clouds will go away.”

Kix’s Response:

Captain Tom Moore is quite an inspiration! And, by the way, now that he’s one hundred, he says that he will continue to walk around his garden as long as he can.

Captain Tom, you are awesome, and you are ACC’s Hero of the Week! And, thank you to Jennie for sharing this story.
