Hero of the Week: Tom Szaky

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we’d like to talk to you about garbage, or more specifically, the garbage crisis around the world. We are seeing photos of sea life dying from plastics and a lot of other junk we shouldn’t be dumping in the great blue sea.

Enter Tom Szaky. He is the founder of TerraCycle in New Jersey – that’s a company that specializes in hard to recycle materials like dirty diapers. Recently, Tom has launched a new program that has partnered up with more than 40 consumer brands, like Nestlé and Kroger.

Loop, which is the name of the program, will eliminate disposable packaging and instead sell reusable containers.  So, your shampoo will not be in a disposable plastic bottle but in an aluminum one. You’ll pay a little more for the “loop” product, but once you’re finished with it, you return the empty container and receive a deposit. Those containers will be cleaned and sterilized and then reused by the brands.

Kix’s Response:

A lot of us recycle, but I’m suspect, folks, on how much good is it really doing or where that stuff really ends up. I, personally, love this idea – use it again! I hope people would be inclined to make returns knowing the impact they could have. Obviously, it’s good for the environment if everyone can get on board.

So, this week, we’d like to recognize Tom Szaky, out of Trenton, New Jersey, as our ACC Hero – he is truly making a difference for our future!
