Cole Swindell’s record label brought him the song “Break Up In The End,” written by Jessie Jo Dillon, Jon Nite, and Chase McGill. And, although Cole writes most of his own songs, he said that he instantly connected to it, like it was his story. When Cole found out that Jessie was one of the writers, he was even more excited. They had been friends before they both found success, and they used to get together to write songs and exchange demos.
As for how the idea for the song came about, Jessie said it came from a book by David Wong titled John Dies At The End. The concept of knowing how the story ends before you read it was something that Jessie found intriguing. The songwriters all knew that they didn’t want to write about dying, so they turned the story into a failed relationship.
The song recounts all those bittersweet moments you go through in a relationship that ends. By the song’s conclusion, you realize that there’s no animosity, it’s just over.
“Break Up In The End” landed just shy of the top of the Billboard Country Airplay Chart in 2018, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When. Here’s Cole Swindell:
