The Song Remembers When: Sam Hunt – “Kinfolks”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Sam Hunt scored a number one earlier this year with “Kinfolks.” He wrote the song with his producer Zach Crowell and frequent collaborators Jerry Flowers and Josh Osborne.

They were all on a songwriting retreat when Sam brought the idea of kinfolks up. He had this title, but he didn’t know quite how to write it. While Jerry came up with the guitar riff, Sam and Josh went to work on the lyrics. Josh kicked out the line, “I want to introduce you to my kinfolks,” and from there, they hammered out the chorus.

Well, Sam took the song home to work on the verses. He liked the idea of being a bit silly. And, Sam even personalized it by adding his mom’s name to one of the lines: “Get Joanie on the phone, she’ll leave us on a light.”

That song became Sam’s sixth career number one. And, it’s The Song Remembers When… Here’s Sam Hunt with “Kinfolks.”
