The Song Remembers When: Luke Bryan – “Play It Again”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2014, Luke Bryan made chart history when he became the first artist to hold the top two spots at the same time! He was at number two with “This is How We Roll,” a collaboration with Florida Georgia Line, and Luke was sitting at number one with “Play It Again.”

Now, “Play It Again” was written by Dallas Davidson and Ashley Gorley. Dallas just happens to be one of Luke’s best friends. The two of them hail from the same small town in Georgia, so he kind of knows what works and what doesn’t when it comes to writing a song for Luke.

This one started off in a usual manner with Ashley on piano and Dallas on guitar. They came up with the line: “She was sitting all alone on a tailgate, tan legs swinging by a Georgia plate.” They wrote the verses first and then the chorus… And, that’s when they got to the line: “Oh my God, this is my song.” In that line, they really wanted to represent how young girls spoke. Ashley said that after that, they just kept saying, “play it again, play it again, play it again” – which they knew would become the song’s title. And, it did, of course.

Not only did it top the chart for Luke, but it stayed there for a total of four weeks! And, it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When… Here’s Luke Bryan and “Play It Again.”
