The Song Remembers When: Runaway June – “Buy My Own Drinks”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2018, Runaway June had their first Top 10 hit with “Buy My Own Drinks,” from their debut album Blue Roses. It was written by the ladies of Runaway June, along with songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Josh Kear.

Josh said that since he’s married to a strong, independent woman and raising a strong, confident daughter, his songs for women are usually about female empowerment. Josh brought the title… Hillary started playing the groove… and they all jumped in on the lyrics. Lead singer Naomi Cooke said that she saw what Josh meant instantly! It was a metaphor for taking care of yourself after a breakup.

The group debuted the song at the Stagecoach Festival in California. And, the reaction from the crowd let Naomi, Jennifer Wayne, and Hannah Mulholland (who was a member of Runaway June at the time) know they had something special on their hands! It would become their breakout hit, peaking inside the Top 10, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When…

Here’s Runaway June and “Buy My Own Drinks.”
