In January 2017, Carrie Underwood was celebrating her fourth consecutive hit from her Storyteller album. “Dirty Laundry”, a song she wrote with longtime collaborators Hillary Lindsey and Ashley Gorley, along with Zach Crowell, had a double meaning. It’s a song about infidelity. The man has lipstick on his collar and red wine stains on his clothes. And, the woman then airs out their business in public to ruin his reputation.
That concept appealed to Carrie, who felt like she could really tap into the character for the performance of the song. To Carrie, the woman in the song was fed up, and she did something about it! She kicked him out!
As for the actual writing of the song, Zach was going through some tracks and he stumbled on the Ajax line: “All the Ajax in the world, ain’t gonna clean your dirty laundry.” They all loved it! And, they knew Ajax, most likely, hadn’t been used in a song before.
