A year ago, Jon Pardi scored his third number one hit with “Heartache Medication,” the title track to his latest album. He co-wrote the song with Natalie Hemby and Barry Dean.
On the day of the writing session, Jon was the first to get there, so he sat down, drank some coffee, and fooled around with a melody on his guitar – that melody led to the start of “Heartache Medication.” Jon had the idea of wanting to write something along the lines of George Strait’s “Fool Hearted Memory.” He wanted it to have an upbeat, feel good vibe, even though you might be nursing a broken heart. And, absolute musts for the tune were the fiddle intro and it needed to be something you could dance to.
Jon knew that the song would be a good title for the album because the project had songs that were meant to make you feel good, like medication, and his kind of medication came in all forms – a drink, a dance, or a new relationship. Jon knew that putting out a song that leaned this traditional was a bit of a risk, so he was happy that fans and radio embraced the song, taking it all the way to number one.
