Last year, Dan + Shay won a Grammy in the Best Country Duo or Group Performance category for their song “Speechless.” The duo said that the inspiration for the song happened after they both got married.
Dan Smyers had the title “Speechless” written in his phone but it wasn’t until he married Abby, in 2017, that he got a clearer picture of what the song might sound like. Both Dan and Shay Mooney knew the feeling and message that they wanted to convey, and they invited songwriters Jordan Reynolds and Laura Veltz to write it with them.
Dan said that it’s a special thing when you’re so smitten that you’re left with no words. He knew that if they felt this way, it would strike a chord with others. The fans loved it and the song went to number one in December 2018 and stayed at the top of the chart for a total of four weeks.
