The Song Remembers When: Lady A – “You Look Good”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2017, after a year-long hiatus, Lady A released the song “You Look Good.” It was written by Ryan Hurd, Hillary Lindsey, and the late producer busbee. The writers wrote this right after going to a 90s revival concert at a club in Nashville featuring various artists taking turns doing covers. That influenced the writers to come up with something upbeat for Ryan’s album.

The song started with busbee’s bass line, setting the groove which led to Ryan coming up with the title “You Look Good” – that phrase inspired the storyline. When the song was done, Ryan sang the demo and busbee, who was a jazz trombone player, filled the song with trumpets and trombones. Although he loved the song, Ryan felt like it didn’t fit his album, so Busbee brought it to Lady A and they loved it.

After doing some re-writes on the second verse which would allow Lady A’s Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott to trade vocals, the song was done. It was the first single from their album Heart Break. The song earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and became a Top 5 hit for the band.
