Hero of the Week: Kenneth Corbin

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we highlight the heroic and brave actions of a bus driver from Columbia, South Carolina. Kenneth Corbin was driving an elementary school bus full of children when a 23-year-old man dressed in army fatigues jumped onto the bus pointing a rifle at Kenneth.

The man demanded that the bus keep driving. Kenneth, who had just gone through active shooter situational training, remained calm and he started to ask the man with the gun questions. At that time the children, who were all told to move to the front of the bus, also started asking questions, like if the man was a soldier and where was he taking them.

Kenneth could tell the man was getting agitated by all the talking, and he told Kenneth to take the kids and get off the bus. The whole ordeal lasted about six minutes, and everyone involved was unharmed. The assailant drove the bus several miles before being captured by local police.

South Carolina officials honored Kenneth for his bravery and how he handled the situation which saved the lives of all involved.

Kix’s Response:

It’s hard to imagine how any of us would handle having a gun pointed at us with a group of children to protect. For his ability to keep the situation from escalating, we are happy to honor bus driver Kenneth Corbin as our ACC Hero!
