The Song Remembers When: Kelsea Ballerini – “Miss Me More”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2019, Kelsea Ballerini earned a Top 5 hit with the final single from her album Unapologetically. Kelsea referred to that project as one of self-discovery, overcoming a breakup before meeting her husband, Morgan Evans. “Miss Me More” was not only about overcoming a breakup but being better off for it.

Kelsea wrote it in L.A. with pop songwriters David Hodges and Leland, who was known writing songs for someone Kelsea is a big fan of – Aussie pop artist Troye Sivan. In fact, she said that she messaged Leland to tell him how much she loved the music he was writing for Troy and that she’d love to write with him one day.

When that day came around, Kelsea was the one who had the hook – “I thought I’d miss you, but I miss me more” – and the three of them just started writing from what Kelsea describes as “the most sassiest place in themselves.” It made for a fun co-write.

In June of 2019, the song fell just shy of the top of the chart. “Miss Me More” also became a cross-over hit for Kelsea that year.
