The Song Remembers When: Blake Shelton – “I’ll Name The Dogs”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2017, Blake Shelton released “I’ll Name The Dogs” which was written by Ben Hayslip, Matt Dragstrem, and Josh Thompson. The three songwriters had Blake in mind when they were writing. They wanted to create something that was in Blake’s wheelhouse but not turn him off with the subject matter which was marriage.

The writers were very much aware that with Blake being a TV star and having a high-profile relationship with Gwen Stefani, he might not want to sing about a song alluding to marriage. But, Blake loved the song! He felt that it had a traditional country sound. To add to that country flavor, Blake brought in Diamond Rio’s Jimmy Olander to play the guitar solo when he recorded the song.

As far as people being worried about fans wondering if this was a hint at Blake and Gwen getting married… Well, as we all know, it would be four years later before that happened!

“I’ll Name The Dogs” was the first single from Blake’s 2017 album Texoma Shore. And, in December of that year, the song became a number one hit!
