This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and so many heroic stories unfolded from those tragic events and continue to do so. We’ve chosen to highlight one of those stories.
Minutes after the South tower of the World Trade Center was hit, 24-year-old Welles Crowther, an equities trader working on the 104th floor, called his mom to let her know he was okay. Welles was a former volunteer firefighter as a teen, so he went into first responder mode. And, he made his way down to the 78th floor instructing people to get onto the express elevator.
People who were there that day remember Welles as the “authoritative voice wearing a red bandana.” They credit him for saving their lives. It was chaotic, with smoke and debris everywhere, but he told people that if they could stand, to stand up and get moving, directing them to the stairwell.
Welles carried an injured woman on his back from the 15th floor. After getting her to safety, he turned around and headed back up the stairs to with the firefighters who were on site. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it out before the towers fell. He is remembered this day by the many he helped. Those people call him their guardian angel.
