The Song Remembers When: Thomas Rhett – “Craving You” ft. Maren Morris

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In the summer of 2017, Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris hit the top of the chart with “Craving You” from his Life Changes album. It was written by Julian Bunetta and Dave Barnes. The songwriting session initially included Thomas Rhett, but he was sick that day and told the guys to go ahead without him.

Dave had the title of the song. He said that there is an intensity about “craving” something as opposed to “wanting” it. Julian loved the idea. They wrote and demoed the song that day and sent it to Thomas.

Although he liked the song, he didn’t think he would record it. He admitted that sometimes when he doesn’t write a song, he has a hard time attaching to it. But, Julian was persistent and asked TR to listen to it in his truck. He did and realized he should record it.

Maren Morris was brought in to sing on the song.  Thomas admitted that her vocals elevated the song giving it a totally different feel. They also had a lot of fun making the video for the song – kind of a mini-movie!

“Craving You” would go on to earn two nominations at that year’s CMA Awards for Music Video and Musical Event of the Year. It was also nominated for an ACM Award (Vocal Event) and a CMT Music Award (Collaborative Video) in 2018.
