The Song Remembers When: Dustin Lynch – “Mind Reader”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In June 2016, Dustin Lynch was at the top of the chart with “Mind Reader.” The song was written by Rhett Akins and Ben Hayslip. In Nashville, those two guys, along with Dallas Davidson, are known as The Peach Pickers. They have an incredible track record for writing hit after hit.

Rhett said that the song came from a real-life dating experience. He was out with this woman he didn’t know very well, but he felt that she knew what he was thinking before he said it – specifically about where to go for dinner. Before he could say it, she said “How ‘bout Kentucky Fried Chicken?” Rhett was thinking that but when she said it, he thought, “Man, she is a little mind reader!” He took that songwriting idea to his buddy Ben.

Dustin Lynch said that he loved the idea of “Mind Reader.” He felt that it let girls know that it was okay for them to make the first move. In addition to loving the message, he also dug the melody and the groove of the song.

“Mind Reader” was the third and final single from Dustin’s sophomore album Where It’s At. At the time, it was his third consecutive number one after the chart-topping success of “Where It’s At (Yep, Yep)” and “Hell Of A Night.”
