The Song Remembers When: Maren Morris – “Girl”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2019, Maren Morris was already on her way to becoming a household name thanks to the success of her debut album, Hero. But, when it came to making her follow-up album, Maren admits that she felt nervous.

Maren was in L.A. and was down to the final songs for her second album.  She wanted to write a song about how some girls hold grievances against each other. As her writing session continued, Maren had the realization that she wasn’t writing to another girl, she was writing to herself.  She thought about how she negatively broke herself down every day. She was hard on herself, and this song was a reminder that you’re going to have bad days but it’s all going to be okay.

“Girl,” which she wrote with Sarah Aarons who also helped write her multi-platinum hit “The Middle,” became the title track to Maren’s sophomore album. She released the song as the project’s lead single in January 2019 with the hope that it would inspire not just girls but anyone who felt a little messed up. She wanted to let them know they weren’t alone.

Well, it sure did make that connection. By August, “Girl” became Maren’s third number one.
