The Song Remembers When: Blake Shelton – “Minimum Wage”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Blake Shelton started 2021 off performing his song “Minimum Wage” on NBC’s New Year’s Eve special hosted by Carson Daly.

The song was written by Jesse Frasure, Corey Crowder, and Nicolle Galyon. Blake said that this was the first Nicolle Galyon song he recorded, and he didn’t know if they wrote it specifically for him, but he felt like this song was his life.

Blake used to roof houses to make ends meet. He would drive to Nashville play a gig and that same day he would turn around and get back to Oklahoma to play another gig in a dive bar. He said that those earlier years of struggling are some of his best memories and he wouldn’t trade them for anything. All that hard work has made the successes he’s experienced all that sweeter. Enter Gwen Stefani, who is now his wife, and he said that he couldn’t be happier with where he’s at.

Using love to feel like a million bucks is not new with songs. You hear it in hits like Chris Stapleton’s Millionaire” or Alan Jackson’sLivin’ On Love.” But, Blake felt that this song had a different spin on it.

“Minimum Wage” was the second single from Blake’s album Body Language. It became the 36th Top 10 song of his career, peaking at number nine in June 2021.
