The Song Remembers When: Chris Stapleton – “Starting Over”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In September 2020, Chris Stapleton released “Starting Over.” In 34 weeks, it would land just shy of the top spot, securing his fourth big hit in a row. Chris wrote the song with his buddy Mike Henderson. The two of them used to be members of The Steeldrivers.

Chris said that he and Mike like to get together at Mike’s place where they have a drink and talk about life – that’s how “Starting Over” came to be. They talked about how some people, whether voluntarily or by circumstance, make a change in their lives.

It was written in 2018, but in 2020 with the world changing, Chris revisited the song. He thought it fit the mood of what was going on. He also tapped the song as the title to his fourth studio album released in November 2020.

At last year’s ACM Awards, Chris won Album of the Year for Starting Over and the title cut was nominated for Song of the Year. Later that year, “Starting Over” swept the Single and Song of the Year categories at the CMA Awards. Chris collected Album of the Year (Starting Over) and Male Vocalist honors at that show as well.
