Hero of the Week: Toni Schuck

A 10K charity race was taking place on a highway in Tampa Bay, Florida. About seven thousand runners were participating to raise money for the Armed Forces Family Foundation. Like with all races, blockades and road closures were set up to accommodate the course that morning.

Word quickly spread among the Florida Highway Patrol troopers that a BMW was spotted speeding and heading in the direction of a road closed for the race. Toni Schuck, a 26-year-veteran of the highway patrol, saw the vehicle blow through the barrier, speeding towards the Sunshine Skyway Bridge full of runners.

Trooper Schuck quickly moved her vehicle in between the bridge and the speeding car, resulting in a near head-on collision. She was taken to the hospital and has since been released, recovering at home from her injuries. As for the driver, the 52-year-old woman was arrested for DUI.
