Since it’s Mother’s Day weekend, we thought we’d include a tribute to all moms from Carrie Underwood.
“Mama’s Song” was written by Carrie, Kara DioGuardi, Marti Frederiksen, and Luke Laird. It was written on the same day as “Undo It.” Apparently, they had a little time left in the songwriting session, so they wanted to try to get another song finished. Since “Undo It” was this rocking upbeat song, they wanted to take the second song in a slower direction.
One of Carrie’s cowriters began playing a slow musical riff, and Carrie threw out the line: “Mama, you taught me to do the right things.” With this song, Carrie thanked her mom for doing such a great job in raising her and giving her the freedom to make the best decisions in life, including choosing the man she would marry. At the time, she was dating Mike Fisher. The couple would go on to get married in July 2010.
In November 2010, “Mama’s Song’ was released as the fourth and final single from Carrie’s third album Play On. Eventually, it would peak just shy of the top spot on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. It also earned Carrie a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance.
