The Song Remembers When: Brett Young – “Lady”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Lady”
Songwriters: Brett Young, Jon Nite, and Ross Cooperman
Album: Weekends Look a Little Different These Days

In Spring 2020, Brett Young released “Lady.” The song was written the year before as a love letter to his soon-to-arrive baby girl Presley and his wife Taylor. Brett said as soon as he realized he and his wife were having a baby girl, he referred to his unborn daughter as “Little Lady.” The song is an expression of hope that his little girl will someday follow in the footsteps of her mother.

Brett brought the idea to his co-writers and shared audio he had gotten from his wife’s obstetrician’s office – the heartbeat of his baby girl. The writers worked up the demo and included the heartbeat audio at the beginning of the song. Brett sent the demo to his wife. And, when he got home, she was still so emotional that they both just sat in the living room crying.

At first, Brett thought of this as a song just for his family. But Dann Huff, his producer, sent a fully produced version as a baby gift to Brett. Once he heard it, he thought that he needed to share it.

“Lady” went to the top of the chart in April 2021 and inspired Brett to write his first children’s book titled Love You, Little Lady.
