The Song Remembers When: Jimmie Allen and Brad Paisley – “Freedom Was A Highway”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Freedom Was A Highway”
Songwriters: Jimmie Allen, Ash Bowers, and Matt Rogers
Album: Bettie James (EP), Bettie James Gold Edition

Jimmie Allen teamed up with Ash Bowers and Matt Rogers to write “Freedom Was A Highway,” a song that became his third number one hit. For this song, Jimmie wanted to capture the freedom of youth, that carefree feeling he felt during his time growing up in Delaware.

Now, Jimmie had long admired Brad Paisley and thought it would be great to have Brad join him on the song. And, for Brad, he was happy to be part of it since he is a fan of Jimmie and his music. Brad was excited to bring his personality to the track through those signature guitar parts you hear in the song. He likes to make a record sound like he’s on it even before you hear him sing.

“Freedom Was A Highway” also gave the pair something to perform on stage when they toured together in 2021. After its release to radio, the song reached the top of the ACC Chart in February 2022.
