Hero of the Week: Hody Childress

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we posthumously recognize Hody Childress as our ACC Hero.

Hody, a farmer and U.S. Air Force veteran, lived in Geraldine, Alabama. He started a covert charity campaign in his small town of nine hundred when he learned that many of the residents could not afford to pay for their prescriptions at the local drug store.

Hody handed the owner of the store a one-hundred-dollar bill and told the store owner to keep his name anonymous. He told him that if someone asked how their prescription was paid for, just tell them that it’s a blessing from God.

Every month, Hody would drop off money at the pharmacy until he became too sick to make the trip. When he couldn’t physically get there, he enlisted his daughter’s help. She had no idea that he had been making these drop offs.

On January 1st, Hody passed away. After Hody’s passing, the owner of the drug store told the story of his generosity which he had continued for over a decade. Many of his admirers, friends and family have started a fund so that his good deed can continue for years to come.

Kix’s Response:

It’s pretty amazing that Hody did this in silence never seeking recognition… We salute Hody Childress as this weekend’s ACC Hero!
