The Song Remembers When: Carrie Underwood – “Ghost Story”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Ghost Story”
Writers: David Garcia, Josh Kear, and Hillary Lindsey
Album: Denim & Rhinestones

At the Grammy Awards last year, Carrie Underwood debuted her song “Ghost Story” live. The song falls into the dramatic revenge theme which Carrie admittedly loves to sing.

Carrie first delivered that kind of story in 2005 with “Before He Cheats.” But, unlike that song, “Ghost Story” isn’t a deliberate “out to get revenge on a cheating boyfriend” song. This lyric delivers more of a “I’m gonna be fine, but you’re never gonna get over me” message.

Carrie says the song was vocally challenging for her to record. Typically, artists will sing a song over and over in the studio, but with “Ghost Story,” Carrie was grateful that she was able to get it down in just a couple of takes.

“Ghost Story” was the first single from Carrie’s latest album Denim & Rhinestones. It would peak inside the Top 10 in October 2022.
