Hero of the Week: William Patterson

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

How many of us would open our home to complete strangers? Well, that’s exactly what William Patterson from Port Townsend, Washington, did.

William works for the ferry system in the historic town. When a storm rolled in and the ferry was shut down, ten tourists became stranded, unable to cross the inlet and go back to their destination. This was supposed to be a quick day trip to Port Townsend, but they had to stay the night.

The small town had no openings in their hotels or Airbnbs. They even tried the local campsite area, but it was also booked up. The tourists, all in their late 70s and early 80s, were worried they’d be forced to spend the night outside, while waiting for the storm to pass, but William told them that they would all be welcome in his home for the night.

The ferry worker quickly called his wife and asked her to prepare ten places to sleep for some folks who are stuck until the ferry resumes in the morning. They had blankets and makeshift beds throughout their living room. And, William, who also owns a small café, made them all pastries and coffee for breakfast.

One of the guests 79-year-old Fred Dente said that it’s how humans should treat other humans. He added that in this day and age, it was exceptional.
