The Song Remembers When: Carrie Underwood – “Cry Pretty”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Cry Pretty”
Songwriters: Carrie Underwood, Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose
Album: Cry Pretty

In 2018, Carrie Underwood released her sixth studio album Cry Pretty. The title cut was the lead single from the project. Carrie wrote the song with The Love Junkies, a trio of songwriters comprised of Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsey, and Liz Rose. It was Hillary who came in with the title.

Not only was Carrie a writer on the song but she produced it alongside David Garcia as well. She said it was so rewarding to be involved in every aspect of the song from start to finish, and she was proud of what they’d created. Carrie hoped people would feel what she felt. She hoped that starting the song with the words “I’m sorry” would draw people in and cause them to wonder why she’s apologizing.

The platinum-selling song became a Top 10 hit for Carrie in September 2018.
