The Song Remembers When: Dierks Bentley – “Living”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Living”
Songwriters: Dierks Bentley, Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, and Jon Nite
Album: The Mountain

The road can be a lonely place for a touring artist or really anyone who travels for a living. Dierks Bentley has often said that while on tour, you feel like life is passing you by. Sometimes the whole day can go by without ever leaving the tour bus.

While traveling together, Dierks and his band have a running joke. When one of the guys would leave the parking lot of the venue and go to Walgreens, Dierks would joke, “Wow! You went to Walgreens? Tell us all about it! You’re really living!” That’s where he got a song idea.

Dierks brought the idea to a songwriters retreat in Colorado. He shared his thoughts with his co-writers Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, and Jon Nite – the core question being “we’re all alive, but are we really living?”

In February 2019, “Living” was released as the third single from Dierks’ The Mountain album. It went on to become his 17th career number one the following September. And, don’t miss the video for this one! It features Dierks and his son Knox really enjoying life together – going on go-kart rides, visiting a water park, and even singing on stage together.
