Heroes of the Week: Nicole McCoy and Wheelchairs For Warriors

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

Nicole McCoy, a Colorado Springs police officer, was on duty when she got the call about a suspect in a stolen car. She was able to spot the car and see the suspect jump out of the moving vehicle, leaving it rolling down the road. Well, Nicole immediately pulled over. She ran towards the car while it was still moving. She jumped into the driver’s seat, trying to pump the brakes. The car crashed with Nicole half out of the car, causing the left side of her body to get trapped under the car. After multiple surgeries, Nicole would lose part of her leg.

After becoming wheelchair-bound, she moved to Olive Hill, Kentucky, to be close to family. Once there, the local police department called Texas-based Wheelchairs For Warriors. The organization presented Nicole with a brand-new electric wheelchair. Nicole had been in a manual wheelchair because that’s all she could afford. But, this organization helps our first responders and military vets with bigger and better wheelchairs to allow them more freedom.

For Nicole, she said the chair allowed her to not feel like a burden on her family. She said the freedom it gives her is priceless.
