In April 2020, Luke Bryan returned to the top of the Countdown for the 22nd time. “What She Wants Tonight,” the second single off his album Born Here, Live Here, Die Here, ascended to number one in 23 weeks.
For Luke, the writing session for this song was something he had been waiting for… He got together with Ross Copperman, Jon Nite, and Hillary Lindsey – some big-time songwriters. Although he had written individually with them, this was the first time they wrote together as a group. They all gathered at Luke’s place outside Nashville where they came up with a few songs during the writing session.
For “What She Wants Tonight,” Ross and Jon had the musical track. When Jon threw out the line “she gets what she wants,” Luke ran with it and said, “I get to be what she wants tonight.” Luke felt like the song would be a big success because it was infectious, and the girl in the song was the one controlling the situation.
