Hero of the Week: Mark Coleman

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion and Hall of Famer Mark Coleman was visiting his elderly parents at their home in Ohio. During the night, a fire started. The house was engulfed in flames, and when Mark opened his bedroom door, the smoke was so bad that he couldn’t breathe. He ran through it to get to his parents’ room and get them out of the house.

Mark’s parents survived, but he almost succumbed to smoke inhalation. Mark was treated at a hospital in Toledo where he was placed in a medically induced coma. After waking up, Mark seemed to have stabilized, so they sent him home. After being home for an hour, he started complaining of numbness in his chest, so Mark’s daughters rushed him back to the hospital. They discovered that he had pneumonia, but, fortunately, he is expected to recover. Mark said he’s just happy his parents are alive.

Kix’s Response:

Man, battling a fire that has engulfed a home is no match for even a tough guy who is a UFC Champion. I’m glad he was able to save the lives of his parents. We’re happy to recognize UFC’s first-ever Heavyweight Champ Mark Coleman as our ACC Hero.
