The Song Remembers When: Darius Rucker – “Homegrown Honey”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Homegrown Honey”
Songwriters: Darius Rucker, Charles Kelley, and Nathan Chapman
Album: Southern Style

In 2015, Darius Rucker peaked just shy of the top spot with “Homegrown Honey,” the lead single from his album Southern Style. The song was born on the golf course. Darius was enjoying a game with his buddy Charles Kelley of Lady A when Charles mentioned that they’d never written a song together. So, the two of them set up a writing session with Nathan Chapman. Darius said it was a great experience filled with lots of laughs and, within a few hours, they had written a song.

They wanted to write something upbeat and catchy about a Southern girl living in New York City. The line, “trying to think of something cool to say, turned around and saw you walking my way,” reminded Darius of when he was younger, hanging out in bars. He said every dude could relate to that line.

“Homegrown Honey” was released in the summer of 2014 and by the following spring, Darius had a big hit on his hands.
